This page explains, in plain English, what English Shop Revision knows about you. It is written for students. There is a longer, more detailed version for parents, carers and schools in our full Privacy Notice.
What information do we collect?
Your first name, the qualification and exam board you chose, the texts you selected, and your revision results — which quotations you have practised, how you did, your streak and XP. A last name is optional; you don't have to give one. We don't collect your date of birth, school, address, phone number or location.
Why do we need it?
So the app can sign you in, show the right texts for your course, remember your progress and work out what to revise next. That's it — we don't use your information for advertising.
Who can see my information?
You can. English Shop staff — administrators and tutors — can see your name, activity and progress so they can support you and manage who has access. They cannot see your email address. No other student can ever see your account, your name or your results. Anything you type into a “in your own words” box stays on your device and is never sent to us.
What we don't do
No adverts, no tracking you around other websites, no selling your information, no profiling you for marketing, no AI marking your work, no leaderboards and no public profiles.
Keeping, pausing and deleting
How long do we keep it?
Your account and revision records stay while you are using the app, so your progress is there when you come back. The app now clears out data it no longer needs: accounts left unused for about two years, accounts whose access was removed about a year ago, and the names in old staff records. If you type the English Shop key wrongly too many times, that record is deleted after 30 days.
What happens if my access is removed?
A teacher or administrator can pause your access — for example if you leave a course. You won't be able to sign in, and the app will tell you your access has been removed. Your revision progress is kept at first, not deleted, so if your access is switched back on your history is still there. After about a year the account is deleted. Every pause and restore is recorded.
What happens if my account is deleted?
Removing access and deleting an account are two different things. If you choose “Delete my account” in My Account, or ask us to delete it, your account and your revision records are removed for good and cannot be restored. Copies may stay in our providers' routine backups for a short time before those are overwritten.
What happens if I stop using the app?
Nothing happens straight away. After a long gap with no sign-in your account is marked for deletion and there is a grace period of about a month. If you sign in during that time, the deletion is cancelled and nothing is lost. If not, the account and its revision records are deleted.
Can I ask about my information?
Yes, always. You can see and change your details in My Account, download a copy of everything we hold about you, and delete your account. You can also ask us what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to how we use it. A parent, carer or school can ask on your behalf.
Who can I contact if I have a privacy question?
Email help@englishshop.co.uk and a person will reply. If you're not happy with our answer, you (or a parent or carer) can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Your choices in the app
Get a copy. Go to My Account and choose “Download my data”. You'll get a file containing everything we hold about you.
Correct something. You can change your name, target, exam board and texts yourself in My Account.
Delete your account. In My Account, “Delete my account” removes your account and your revision records for good.
We only store what is needed to keep you signed in and to remember the settings you chose. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, so there is nothing to opt into.
If you are under 18 and unsure about any of this, talk to a parent, carer or teacher — and ask us anything.
